Need some help with 4G verizon iPhone that has 3G network?

I purchased my iPhone yesterday and I wanted to download some app off app store from my phone. But when I clicked install, the alert message said I need to connect to a wi-fi. Does this mean I can never download apps without wi-fi? Or am I missing some information? Thanks!
