How do you on Wii Mario cart on VS get a 3 star ranking?

I am playing the game an I seem to only get a 1 star ranking. I once got a 2 star ranking and I don"t even know how I did that. So how do you get a 3 star ranking, I am also trying to get stars for the WI FI game also.
