How can I get Java to work?

I am trying to download Java to my laptop and its says it isn't connected to the internet. Well my laptop runs off of wi-fi. And when I try to go to the help section on the java site and it has no questions that relate to my issue. I have a windows 7 platform and my internet browser is firefox. So can someone help me figure out why the Java installation runner won't work?
